The Three Crappie Rigs
Crappie gear is cheap compared to bass gear — the leverage is in matching the rig to how you'll actually fish: bank and dock with a bobber, vertical jigging brush piles, or chasing fish you can see on forward-facing sonar.
Season Playbook
The spawn pushes fish shallow to buck brush and stake beds in 2–8ft. A slip bobber and a Baby Shad is genuinely all you need. This is the season to take a kid.
Fish slide out to 15–25ft brush piles. Vertical jig over the top or shoot docks; the bite windows are early morning and dusk.
Crappie roam shad flats. Cover water — jig under a cork, or slow-troll until you contact a school, then sit on it.
Big-slab season on Ozark lakes. Deep brush in 20–30ft, tiny movements, and hair jigs shine. This is where LiveScope pays for itself.

Minnows or jigs?
Jigs, most days — they cover water faster and you're not managing a bait bucket. Keep minnows in your pocket for cold fronts and pressured fish that refuse plastic.
